Video Pick: “Imagine The Possibilities” from Barbie

Today’s video pick is from Barbie. Yes, you read that correctly, Barbie. Though the video promoting their new “You can be anything” campaign isn’t quite perfect, it’s the best thing I’ve seen from the toy company ever.

These Are The Best Places In The U.S. For Women-Owned Businesses

Today’s recommended reading is from Fast Company: “These Are The Best Places In The U.S. For Women-Owned Businesses.”

According to the article, the top 10 metro areas for female entrepreneurship are:

  1. Boulder, Colorado
  2. Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut
  3. Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado
  4. Santa Cruz-Watsonville, California
  5. Santa Rosa, California
  6. San Luis Obispo, California
  7. San Francisco-Oakland, California
  8. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
  9. Portland, Maine
  10. Fort Collins, Colorado

I was sorry that there isn’t a single entry from Texas on the list. We need to do better.

Playboy Magazine Will No Longer Feature Nudes

I’m not quite sure why this amazes me, but it does. I still remember an episode of “Designing Women” where Julia repeatedly ran her car into the corner “newspaper” stand when they started carrying “Playboy” magazine (I think). And now that’s coming to an end …

Well, there goes the neighborhood, if your neighborhood is magazines being known for the thing they’ve always been known for. Starting in March, after years of circulation struggles, Playboy magazine will no longer include fully nude photos of women, just images of women as naked as you’d see them in any other mainstream publication.

The change takes effect in March 2016.

100 Overlooked Films Directed by Women

Today’s recommended read is “100 Overlooked Films Directed by Women: See Selections from Sight & Sound Magazine’s New List” at  Open Culture. Worth taking a look, especially since Open Culture will give you links to several movies for free online viewing.

Greta Gerwig, Isabelle Huppert, and Tilda Swinton; directors like Jane Campion and Claire Denis, and critics like Amy Taubin and Camille Paglia, all focusing on female-directed films that deserve a second look.

Serena Williams isn’t one of the top-paid athletes

Today’s suggested read takes a look at the reality of the “pay gap” between male and female athletes. Serena Williams is unarguably one of the most recognized athletes in the country, and absolutely one of the top performing. However, according to Forbes she is only the 47th highest-paid athlete in the world.

I got this via a Mashable article (linked below). An interesting topic that (as a non-athlete) I hadn’t thought about. It’s depressing to know that the gender pay gap influences every field out there.

Covet confidence, not beauty

It’s no secret that women are told from the very first day of life (practically) that we should aspire to be pretty. And studies show that achieving the standard of beauty will result in higher wages, more success at work, and often becoming the envy of everyone else who doesn’t meet the standard.

No one has ever asserted that being pretty will make you happy.

You should work toward being confident in who you are, inside and out. It will reduce your stress. It will make you happier. And, believe it or not, it will make you more attractive to those around you.
